Edward B. Snyder62, Garman’s Coal employee

Edward B. Snyder, 62, of Manheim, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 21, 2011.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Norman S. and Ada Z. Burkholder Snyder. Edward was the husband of Erla W. Martin Snyder.

He was a member of Clearview Mennonite Church, Manheim. Edward worked for Garman’s Coal and Mulch Products, Manheim.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five sons: Merle M., husband of Charlene Zimmerman Snyder, of Reinholds; Nelson M., husband of Rhoda Ziesemer Snyder, of Lititz; Edward M., husband of Leanne High Snyder, of Manheim; Joel L., husband of Crystal J. Weaver Snyder, of Elizabethtown; and Jason M. Snyder, at home; two daughters: Arlene M., wife of Jason S. Newswanger, of Myerstown; and Karen M. Snyder, at home; 18 grandchildren; and four brothers: Norman, husband of Minerva Snyder, of Carlisle; Elmer B., husband of Alma Snyder, of Bethel; Harvey, husband of Rhoda Snyder, of New Holland; and Leonard, husband of Yvonne Snyder, of Manheim.

Preceding him in death is a grandson.

The funeral service was held on Oct. 24 at the Clearview Mennonite Church, Manheim. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Mary Jane Sauble83, homemaker, enjoyed gardening

Mary Jane Sauble, 83, of Manheim, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011.

Born in Mount Joy Township, she was the daughter of the late Harvey R. and Minnie B. Sweigart Greiner.

Mary Jane was a full time farmer’s wife and homemaker. She was the wife of late Martin G. "Bud" Sauble who died in February 2007.

Mary Jane was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colebrook. She also was a member of Gold Star Mothers Inc. of Greater Harrisburg, member of Dela Ches Fishing Association and life member of Lebanon Post 23 VFW Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Memorial Association of Campbelltown. Mary Jane enjoyed baking and flower and vegetable gardening.

Surviving are three nephews: Leroy, husband of Cindy Judy; Melvin Judy Jr.; and Dan Mitchell; brother-in-law: Melvin Judy Sr.; and sisters-in-law: Elsie Greiner and Mary Miller. She will be lovingly missed by a neighboring family who was very special to her: Jeff and Chris High and their children: Jordan, Nate, Jenna, Diana and Gloria.

Preceding her in death is a son: Martin G. Sauble Jr., who died Dec. 31, 1968; a brother: Leroy S. Greiner; sister: Verna Mae Judy; and a niece: Patsy Mitchell.

Dorothy M. Rubin88, Brethren Village resident, Rubin Steel employee

Dorothy M. Rubin, 88, of Lancaster, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Brethren Village Retirement Community.

Born in Antipol, Poland, she was the daughter of the late Max and Esther (Golda) Mulnick. Dorothy came to the U.S. with her mother and her brother in November 1928. They rejoined her father in New York. She was then raised in Coatesville.

After graduating from Coatesville High School, she worked at the family business, Rubin Steel Company, for over 35 years. Dorothy was a life member of the organization, Hadassah, and a member of the Sisterhood at Temple Beth El. She volunteered at Town Fair in Lancaster and for Meals on Wheels.

Dorothy is survived by her sons: Elliott, husband of Beverly Rubin, and Stephen, husband of Deborah Rubin, all of Lancaster; a sister: Julie Levitt, of Denver, Colo.; and five grandchildren: Frank; Adina, wife of Rick Corsaro; and Jeffrey, Rebecca and Scott Rubin.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Lawrence L. Rubin; and brother: Nathan Mulnick .

The funeral service was held on Oct. 24 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, Lititz, with Rabbi Stephen Parnes officiating. Interment took place in Beth El Cemetery in Lititz.

James H. Risser80, Chrysler dealership owner, veteran

James H. Risser, 80, of Ephrata, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 in Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Lancaster, a son of the late Peter M. and Susanna (Hershey) Risser, he was the husband of Nancy (Bishop) Risser for 54 years.

Jim was a graduate of Lititz High School and Lancaster Business School. He served with the Air Force in the Korean War. Retiring in 1988, he owned and operated the Benny Bishop Chrysler Dealership, Ephrata, for 30 years. Jim was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ; Ephrata Lodge #665 F&AM; Rajah Temple; 50-year member of Lancaster County Shrine Club and Ephrata Rotary Club and was an avid golfer and sports fanatic.

Also surviving is a daughter: Ann Elizabeth, wife of Brian Vaughan Beal, of Collegeville; grandchildren: Shawn Nolan, Erin Alexandra and Delaney Katherine Beal, all of whom he cherished; and sisters: Ruth Wimble, of West Chester; and Harriet, wife of Wayne Keene, of Millersville.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. from Bethany United Church of Christ, 140 E. Main St., Ephrata, with Rev. Stephen Ericson officiating. Private inurnment with military honors will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata.

Walter G. Martin73, retired electrician, Vietnam vet

Walter G. Martin, 73, of Lititz, formerly of Denver, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at Landis Homes.

Born in Terre Hill, he was the son of the late Clyde G. and Minnie (Groff) Martin. He was the husband of Faye (Landis) Martin, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.

Walter was an active member of the Pine Grove Mennonite Church in Bowmansville. He served on the board of directors for Camp Men-O-Lan in Quakertown and was an assistant scout master for the Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop #172. He worked as an electrician and retired in 2003. Walter served seven years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. While on the U.S.S. Enterprise he made a trip around the world. Walter enjoyed traveling, visiting 49 of the 50 states plus several Canadian Provinces. He enjoyed hunting and making jellies and jams for competition in the local fairs.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter: Sheila Martin, of Denver; a son: Jason, husband of Melissa Lingle-Martin, of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters: Grace, wife of Selmer Redcay, of Coudersport; and Mary Good, of Ephrata; and a brother-in-law: Noah, husband of Pauline Zimmerman, of Lancaster.

Anna Lutz Lehman88, missionary nurse

Anna Lutz Lehman, 88, of Landis Homes, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011.

Born in Mount Joy, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Ruth (Nissley) Lutz. She was the wife of the late Maurice Lehman.

Anna was a graduate of Goshen College. She was a missionary nurse in Somalia, Africa from 1960-1973. Later, she was a nurse and evening supervisor at Landis Homes for 27 years. She enjoyed counted cross-stitch, reading and stamp collecting.

Anna is survived by four nieces; six nephews; two step-daughters: Kathleen, wife of Harry Lehman, of Chambersburg; Patricia McFarlane, of Goshen, Ind.; four stepgrandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by a brother: John Henry Lutz; and a sister: Florence L. Miller.

A memorial service was held Oct. 23 at Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel. A private interment was held in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.

Verna E. Long81, Bell operator, Matthew 25 volunteer

Verna E. Long, 81, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Heart of Lancaster Hospital.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd R. and Dora E. Bowman Emmert. Gerald V. Long, her beloved husband of 52 years, died in 2004.

She was a graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School. In addition to raising her children, she worked part-time as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone and RCA. Verna was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a former member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir. Verna had a long history of volunteerism, most recently at Matthew 25 Thrift Shop and at Lancashire Hall where she sang to the residents. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, scrapbooking, knitting and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving family members are her children: Linda L., wife of Robert C. Lowe II, of Lititz; Richard P., husband of Angela R. Long, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Carol A. Long, MD, of Asheville, N.C.; and Joan L., wife of Joseph M. Gorlaski, of Lititz; and her grandchildren: Christy; Michael, husband of Karen; Ben; Alycia; Matt; Justin; and Anna.

Bertha A. Kinard72, Raymark chevron winder

Bertha A. Kinard, 72, of Manheim, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday evening, Oct. 18, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Harrisburg, Bertha was the daughter of the late Roy Lutz and Dorothy M. Nye Steinberger. She was the wife of the late George W. H. Kinard, who died in 2007, and the late Lester Boyer, who died in 1990.

Bertha was a graduate of Middletown Area High School. Prior to retiring, she was employed for 36 years as a chevron winder by the former Raymark in Manheim. Following retirement, she was employed part-time by McDonald’s restaurant in Manheim.

Bertha was a member of Real Life Church of God in East Petersburg and of Quentin Roosevelt Lions Club in Lebanon. She enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She also enjoyed photography; Bob Ross painting; listening to music, especially country music; and spending time with her family.

B. Rodney Flory Sr.92, Landis Homes resident

B. Rodney Flory Sr., 92, formerly of Lancaster, died at Landis Homes Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011.

He was the husband of Dorothy N. (Ryder) Flory since May 1940. Dorothy is a resident of Landis Homes. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Eby H. and Ida (Miller) Flory.

He was a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church.

B. Rodney Sr. is survived by three sons: B. Rodney Jr., husband of Esther (Young) Flory, and Timothy R., husband of Geraldine (Hartman) Flory, both of Lancaster; and Donald E., husband of Cathy (Steiner) Flory, of Pandora, Ohio; a daughter: Emily B., wife of Kenneth W. Kilgore, of Lititz; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by one grandson; four brothers: Rufus, Roy, Eby and Robert; and a sister: Mary Suraci.

The funeral was held on Oct. 26 at Longeneckers Reformed Mennonite Church, Lancaster, with Glenn M. Gross and Samuel B. Eshelman officiating.

Evelyn R. Fisher94, IU 13 secretary, active volunteer

Evelyn Ruth Kern Fisher, 94, of Luther Acres and formerly of East Petersburg, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 19, 2011 at Luther Acres.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Harvey B. and Sara Kling Kern Sr. Her husband, Paul N. Fisher, died in November 1998.

Evelyn was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church. She had worked a number of years at the Lancaster Consumers Ice Co. where she met and later married her husband, Paul. In 1982 she retired from Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13, where she had been a secretary. She was an active member of Prime Time American Business Women in East Petersburg, the Auxiliary to Lancaster General Hospital and was the past secretary and treasurer for the Northeastern Ice Association for 23 years. She loved giving parties, was an avid Phillies fan, enjoyed playing cards, golf and croquet.

Evelyn is the last of her immediate family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother: Harvey B. Kern Jr.; and sister: Harriet L. Meekins.

Evelyn’s funeral service was held at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., Lancaster, with the Rev. Larry Leister officiating. Interment took place in Riverview Burial Park.
