Deaths of Local Interest – Feb. 16, 2017

Jennifer R. Brown, 38, of Christiana, passed away at her home Feb. 9. Jennifer graduated from Solanco High School class of 1996, where she was on the field hockey and track team, and assisted with the girls basketball team. Jennifer loved to dance at Debbie School of Dance, loved all animals, shopping, and most of all, she loved her husband and son. Her grandmother, I. Jane Duke Kauffman, lives in Lititz.

Harold E. “Mike” Brubaker died peacefully Feb. 5 at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. He was 91. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was selected and trained as a cryptographer in World War II. He was an accomplished trumpet player influenced by musicians such as Doc Severinsen, Harry James, and Chet Baker. He was also a champion table tennis player throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He owned and operated The Brubaker Agency in Millersville. His daughter, Lin Roussel, wife of Jim; and grandchildren, Brian Siegrist, wife of Tania; and James Roussel; all reside in Lititz. Jenna Neas, wife of Matt, lives in Manheim.

Dennis M. Burns, 67, of Palmyra, passed away Feb. 7 in Ephrata, surrounded by family. For 35 years, he worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry where he rose to the position of regional director of Tax Operations and Unemployment Compensation, but those who really knew him have always suspected he only played solitaire. He worked for a time at the Gate House in Lititz, as another way to give back to the community that supported him in his time of need. He was an avid motorcyclist and hiker as well.

Ralph Ray Heiser Jr., 39, of Coudersport, passed away suddenly Feb. 4 at Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport. Ralph was a 1996 graduate of Ephrata High School, and as a young man he proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed hunting, served with the Civil Air Patrol in the early 2000s, and more recently volunteered for the Coudersport Fire Department. His father and stepmother: Ralph and Kathy Heiser, live in Lititz.

John O. Herr, 94, of Ephrata, passed away Feb. 9 at home. John was a member of the Village Chapel Mennonite Church. He was a farmer in the Coatesville and Downingtown area and also worked at New Holland Machine Co. for 15 years. He enjoyed making crafts and volunteering for MCC. He assembled more than 300 comforter tops for MCC. A sister, Mabel Herr, lives in Lititz.

Elizabeth W. Martin, 88, of Stevens, passed away Feb. 8 at home. A mother of six, she was a member of Denver Mennonite Church.A brother, Rufus Martin, lives in Lititz.

Russell G. Ott Jr., 90, of Lancaster, died Feb. 7 at Hamilton Arms Nursing Center. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was retired from AT&T. In his retirement he had worked part time in the custodial department at Manheim Township School District. He enjoyed raising tomato plants and had enjoyed sports, especially baseball. His son, Bruce R., husband of Rev. Sally W. Ott, lives in Lititz.
