Warriors, MC ousted in District Duals

The Round of 16 in the District Three Triple-A Duals Wrestling Tournament wasn’t kind to Warwick and Manheim Central on Tuesday night.

Host Cumberland Valley, the No. 2 seed, recorded five pins and three tech falls en route to a dominant 62-5 win over the 15th-seeded Warriors in Mechanicsburg.

Overall, the Eagles (13-2) took 13 of 14 bouts and punched their ticket to the quarter-finals, where they disposed of Big Spring by a 48-9 decision to advance.

“They’re good. We have a young team and we wrestled hard, we wrestled tough, (but) we were just outmanned, outmuscled and outgunned,” Warwick coach Ned Bushong said.

Elsewhere, host Exeter Township (19-2), the No. 4 seed, won the final six bouts to break open a 24-18 match and earn a 54-18 victory over 13th-seeded Manheim Central (9-4) in Reading.

For the Warriors (15-4), senior Devin Schnupp (27-1) recorded his team’s only win, a 17-2 tech fall over Cumberland Valley’s Russell Zimmerman 5:54 in the 113-pound bout.

“Good match,” Bushong said. “(Devin) wrestled well … All the kids wrestled hard. We just got plain-out beat. We got handled. But they didn’t back down, they went out, they wrestled them and that’s all you can ask for. They did the best they could tonight.”

The bonus points for CV started at 106, where Cade Reichart built a 9-0 lead through two against Mateo Chacon and posted an 11-0 major.

Schnupp was next, and he capitalized on two takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the first period to take quick command 7-1. Later, Schnupp’s takedown late in the final stanza clinched his 17-2 tech fall in 5:54, giving Warwick its only lead 5-4.

But it didn’t last long.

JD Barrick’s fall in :12 over Connor Esbenshade at 120, followed by Connor Smith’s 2:42 fall in in the 126-pound weight class put the Eagles in front 16-5.

Warwick’s Brock Lieberman trailed just 5-0 through two against Wyatt Long at 132, but the CV grapplers added two takedowns in the third for a 9-1 major decision.

In the 138-pound bout, Ben Hershey’s takedown with :56 to go in the middle stanza cut his deficit to 8-4, but the Eagles’ Will Kaldes pulled away to a 11-4 decision to make it 23-5.

Cal Reichart then scored a 17-1 tech fall in 3:30 over Luke Hirtzel at 145, Felix Belga pinned Andrew Morgan in :32 at 152, Quinn Bonney earned a fall in 2:20 over Ian Butzer in the 160-pound bout, and the Eagles were cruising 40-5.

Cumberland Valley’s Quentin Milliken kept the train rolling with a 15-0 tech fall in 2:10 over Steven Seepaul at 170, Jake Schalles recorded a fall in 3:18 over Eric Garner at 182, and Dayne Ross was a 13-4 winner over Josh Miller in the 195-pound bout to extend the Eagles’ lead to 56-5.

Evan Clark was next for the Warriors and his takedown with :29 left in the third put him front 4-3 against Jake Black at 220. After Black tied it with an escape, Clark shot, only to see the CV senior counter with a four-point takedown and survive for an 8-4 win.

Nate Miller, too, gave a valiant effort in the heavyweight match, but came up just a little bit short, 5-4, against the Eagles’ Robert Goodrich.

“(Evan) wrestled hard … he went for it, teeter-tottered there and ended up losing it, but he went for it,” Bushong said. “Nate went hard … I mean, all the kids wrestled hard.”

At Exeter Township High School, Manheim Central trailed the Eagles just 24-18 after Ryan McKee decked Chris Matthews in 5:52 in the 120-pound bout.

But the Eagles won the final six bouts and advanced with a 54-18 decision. Exeter then went on to defeat 5th-seeded Spring Grove 47-18 to reach Thursday’s semi-finals, where it will face top-seeded Central Dauphin.

Dominic Caccese’s 3-2 OT win over Isaiah Mejias in the 170-pound bout gave Exeter an early lead, but then MC’s Jared Siegrist responded by flattening Michael Crane in just :20 in the 182-pound bout to give the Barons a 6-3 advantage.

It would be their only lead of the night.

The Eagles finished with five falls in the match, with two of those coming at 195 and 220, where Dennis Karas pinned Brock Fittery in 2:45 and Jonathan Greenleaf put Sam Martin’s shoulders to the mat in 3:48 to put Exeter up 15-6.

When Oscar Daniels earned a 13-5 major decision over Elliot Martin in the heavyweight bout, the Eagles were in front 19-6.

Cade Zeamer got MC back on the scoreboard when he decked Brandon Borton in 2:22 in the 106-pound bout. Then after Exeter’s Ryan Watts earned a 15-0 tech fall over Ryan Kreider in 3:46 at 113, McKee’s fall at 120 got the Barons within six.

But they would get no closer.

Exeter’s Austin DeSanto won by forfeit at 126, James Harkness earned a 10-2 major decision over Zack Zeamer in the 132-pound bout, Brett Kulp pinned Caleb Enck in 3:07 at 138, and Justin Landis scored a fall in 4:33 over Kyle Zeamer in the 145-pound bout.

The Eagles then closed it out with Tyler Bagoly defeating Connor Pavlik 6-1 at 152 and John Harrell picking up a fall in 3:42 over Andrew Siegrist in the 160-pound bout.
