Penn Manor rallies to defeat Warwick, 37-32

It was a tale of two halves for Warwick and Penn Manor last Wednesday, Jan. 15.

The Warriors, looking to win for the third time in their last four league matches, jumped to a big 29-3 lead through eight bouts.

Their advantage disappeared, though, as the Comets answered by taking the next six – with five falls and one major – on their way to earning a 37-32 Section One win in Lititz.

The loss dropped Warwick to 2-3 in L-L (8-6 overall).

“Our lightweights and (Austin) Maguire at heavyweight kept it close, and then right through the middle Penn Manor was considerable stronger than we are,” Warwick coach Ned Bushong remarked.

The Comets’ Zeb Pfeiffer snapped a 4-4 tie after two periods against David Brubaker, scoring six third-period points in a 10-5 win to put Penn Manor in front.

But Maguire answered by decking Mark Conrad in 4:31 to start a run of six straight wins by the Warriors. After Devin Schnupp won by forfeit at 106, Brock Lieberman took the early lead with a first-period takedown and held on for a 4-2 win over Jordan Harsh in the 113-pound weight class.

Josh Charles won by forfeit at 120 and then Ben Hershey was dominant in a 19-3 tech fall at 126, making it 26-3.

The momentum continued at 132 for the Warwick grapplers, with Logan Stroh outlasting Matt Schneider by a 9-6 decision. The Warwick senior scored the second of his two reversals in the third and held on.

Penn Manor, however, began to turn the tide on a 40-second fall by Matt Louiseau at 138. Lee Estep (4:49) at 145, Jonah Barley (2:43) at 152, Jack Zimmerman (1:47) at 160 and Jonah Hoffer (1:04) at 170 then combined to give the Comets a lead they never lost.

With just two bouts remaining, Ashton Leschke clinched it for Penn Manor with a 12-1 major decision at 182, putting his team in front 37-29.

Carson Snavely completed the scoring for Warwick at 195, capitalizing on a third-period takedown to defeat Jesse Kann 2-1.

“Our guys went out and they wrestled well, they wrestled hard for us, but we were just out-manned through the middle weights,” Bushong remarked.
