The Manheim Central swimmers are in the win column.

In fact, for the Baron boys, they not only got their first victory of the season, but snapped a long winless drought by defeating Ephrata 78-77 in a Section Two meet at the Lititz recCenter last Tuesday, Jan. 14. It’s believed to be the MC boys’ first win in five years.

The outcome was still in doubt until the end, but sophomores Matt Daniel (1:05.62), Marcus Huber and Nate Ressel took first, third and fifth respectively, in the 100 breaststroke, putting the Barons in good position going into the final even – the 400 free relay.

Although the Mounts touched the wall first in that event in 3:53.87, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Barons (1-0 L-L, 1-3 overall), who avenged last year’s one-point loss to Ephrata.

“It was very exciting,” Central coach Heather Fittery said. “We knew we had to take first, third and fifth in the 100 breaststroke in order to win the meet because we had the 400 relay coming up and we weren’t sure whether we’d win that one or not. Once we did, we told the boys, ‘Just play it safe for the 400 free relay.’ Don’t get disqualified is pretty much what it came down to.”

The Lady Barons (1-0 L-L, 1-3 overall) completed the sweep, getting double individual wins from juniors Brigette Fittery and Jeanine Wagner, and sophomore Paetyn Zeamer en route to a 105-63 win.

“I felt fairly comfortable that if we went in with a strong lineup,” Fittery said, “that we would be able to pull off a win for them.”

The Baron boys obviously had a strong lineup as well, and Daniel was on top of his game, recording career-best times in two individual wins, in addition to competing with the first-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Besides taking the 100 breaststroke, the MC sophomore also claimed top honors in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.63.

“He is peaking,” Fittery said of Daniel, who earlier shattered his 500 free record with a first-place time of 4:46.51 against Manheim Township. “Matt’s actually swimming faster now than what he was last year up at States. He’s swimming exceptionally well right now.”

Senior Austin Enck, meanwhile, capitalized on a strong finish in the 100 freestyle to place first in a career-best 57.50 seconds, adding key points for the Barons.

“He was third going into the last set of flags and pulled it out,” Fittery said.

Senior Josh LeBoon, too pulled out a clutch win for Central, turning in a career-best 1:03.16 to capture the 100 backstroke.

In addition to their individual victories, Enck and LeBoon joined Daniel on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Freshman Kody Striver and senior Daniel Kolk completed the foursomes.

There were also plenty of career-best efforts on the girls side, where Zeamer shattered her previous best en route to taking the 100 backstroke (1:04.11). She nearly duplicated that feat while earning gold in the 200 I.M. in a time of 2:20.11.

“She swam well,” Fittery said. “She’s gone a 2:19 already (in the 200 I.M.), so she was just off a little bit, but she looked good.”

Brigette Fittery claimed individual wins in the 100 fly in a career-best 1:10.01 and 100 breaststroke in 1:14.47. Wagner touched the wall first in the 50 free (27.40) and 100 free (1:01.56).

“I feel that our top three girls actually all are swimming faster now than they were even at the finish of last year,” coach Fittery said.

That was evident with Fittery, Wagner and Zeamer all competing with the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Freshman Amelia Dissinger completed the 400 free foursome, and teamed up with Sophia Iosue, Anna Burkhart and Kayla Smith on the first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:58.45). Iosue was a member of the 200 medley relay.
