Irvin E. Straw Jr. and Loris Jean (Snyder) Straw celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

Irvin and Jean were wed Jan. 14, 1967. Irvin met Jean as the tour guide for Jean’s youth group during a Gettysburg Battlefield tour. They reunited a year later after Irvin preached at a church in Hummelstown. They went to Hersheypark that evening, to start off a period of dating leading to that special day.

Jean graduated from Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown. She worked as a CNA at a Lutheran home in Shrewsbury, and in the deli at Bob’s Market in Lititz. Irvin graduated from Central High School, York; Gettysburg College; and Gettysburg Seminary. He retired as pastor of Salem Lutheran Church of Kissel Hill in 2006. He served as interim pastor for three congregations, and is presently serving as visitation pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lititz.

Jean has been active in the Lutheran Church Women. Irvin has been a Boy Scouts of America leader for over 50 years, a former Lion’s Club member, and a former volunteer firefighter/driver. Jean and Irvin are Senior Shepherds at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Lititz, where they make toys for children.

They love downtown Lititz and have been residents since December 1983. They frequently attend special events and family functions at Lititz Springs Park, but also enjoy family vacations in their camper and trips to the mountains. They go on bus tours and enjoyed a cross country vacation in 2012, trekking 8,235 miles in 38 days. Jean’s hobby is counted cross stitch and Irvin’s hobbies include canoeing, visiting historical sites, and most of anything related to trains.

Jean and Irvin are proud parents of: Michelle, wife of Tait Harbaugh, Mount Joy; Christine, wife of Eugene Golbourne, Lancaster; and Catherine Sload of Lititz. They have two grandchildren: Caitlin and Brandon.
