Risa Paskoff, Executive Director of Aaron’s Acres was the guest speaker at the February 4th Rotary Club of Lititz dinner meeting. She spoke about the importance of the organization and the work they do for kids with special needs. The organization’s theme is “Embracing Possibilities Beyond Disabilities.” She started with a case history of a family with three autistic children and described the significant turnaround achieved through the program. The burden on the family was severe, yet the results on behavior patterns made a difference that extended beyond the camp itself.

Extensions of the program now have children involved in the community to assist in other causes. For example, a recent event raised over $700 for Kids with Cancer. This not only helps kids develop social skills, but it provides a powerful boost to self-esteem as well.

Aaron’s Acres has established programs in Berks and Dauphin counties. Their challenges include office space and camp facilities for their activities. They operate on a $500,000 budget, mostly to cover staff. Sources of funding include grants and donations from philanthropic organizations, like Rotary. She also indicated that no child is denied access to the program.

The Rotary Club of Lititz is in the process of distributing funds to various organizations in Lititz and the surrounding area which have been derived from proceeds from the Annual Craft Show, the Annual Golf Tournament, and the Travelogue series now in its 51st year.
