William B. Hornberger, 99, WWII vet, Lititz UMC member, bank VP, trumpet player, avid golfer

William B. (Bill) Hornberger, 99, passed away Oct. 25, 2016 at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.

Bill was born in Denver on June 1, 1917, and was the last remaining sibling of six children of Charles K. and Lizzie L. Hornberger.

He was married 68 years to the late Charlotte W. Hornberger, and was a member of the Lititz United Methodist Church. Bill is survived by three sons: Barry, married to Pat Vitkow, of Lafayette Hill; Chuck, married to Ted Gaiser, of Portland, Maine; and John, married to Cindy Hornberger, of Landisville. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bill graduated from the former Lititz High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed at Key West, Fla. Upon discharge from the service, he was a Prudential Insurance Co. agent for many years. After leaving the insurance field, he was employed by Farmers National Bank in Lititz as a trust officer. He retired in 1982 from the Bloomsburg Bank – Columbia Trust Co., Bloomsburg, as vice president in the trust department.

Bill was an avid trumpet player and member of the Rohrerstown Band and the Moravian Trombone Choir. He enjoyed playing trumpet while living at Masonic Village up until the age of 97. He also loved to play golf and vacation in Stone Harbor, N.J., and did both regularly right up to and well into retirement.

A celebration of Bill’s life was held at the Lititz United Methodist Church on Oct. 31. Interment of Bill’s remains will be private.
