Walter S. Hubbs III, 77, ‘Papa Smurf,’ retired trucker, loved old cars and making people laugh

Walter S. Hubbs III, 77, of Lititz, passed away at his residence on Friday, June 24, 2016.

He was born in Lancaster, the son of the late Walter S. Hubbs Jr. and Violet O. (Lefever) Hubbs. His wife, whom he lovingly called Mommy, Carolyn A. Hubbs. preceded him in death in 2003.

Walter was a retired truck driver; everyone knew him as “Papa Smurf.” He enjoyed camping, old cars and going to car shows, spending time with his family, and making people laugh. He was a member of the Lititz American Legion Post No. 56.

Surviving are his children: Cynthia Hubbs; Jolene, married to Richard Horner; and Walter S. Hubbs IV; his siblings: Ruthie, John, Robert, Marvin, and David; his granddaughter: Erica McCue, great-granddaughter: Adeline McCue; and niece: Debbie Myers, who was always there for him.

Services were held June 30 at Groff Family Funeral Service, Lancaster. Burial was in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers donations in Walter’s name may be made to Lancaster SPCA, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, Pa., 17603.
