Violet H. Pfaltzgraff92, missionary, nurse

Violet H. Pfaltzgraff, 92, formerly of Brethren Village, Lancaster, passed away Friday, afternoon, Sept. 23, 2011 at Cross Keys Village-The Brethren Home Community, New Oxford.

Born in Millport, she was the daughter of the late Willis B. and Emma Geib Hackman. Violet was the wife of the late Dr. Roy E. Pfaltzgraff, M.D., who passed away in March.

She was a 1937 graduate of Rothsville High School and attended Elizabethtown College from 1937 to 1939. She graduated from Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1942. Violet and her husband, Roy, were medical missionaries in Nigeria, Africa, for 38 years. She served as a nurse, supervisor, treasurer and administrator at the Adamawa Provincial Leprosarium in Virgwi, Nigeria. She enjoyed the beautiful things in nature and life, loved the challenges and creations of needle craft and was an avid reader and flower gardener.

Violet will be lovingly remembered by her children: Roy Jr., husband of Kathy Pfaltzgraff, of Haxtun, Colo.; George, husband of Buffy Pfaltzgraff, of Hampton, Iowa; David, husband of Ruth Pfaltzgraff, of Keymar, Md.; Kathryn Pfaltzgraff, of Abbotstown; and Nevin Pfaltzgraff, husband of Judy Miller, of Coulee Dam, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was the last of 16 brothers and sisters.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Life Celebration Memorial Service at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, 351 Middle Creek Road, Lititz, on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Wilbur Rohrer officiating. Private family interment will be held at the Millport Union Cemetery.
