Stella S. Manning, 98, co-owned Manning’s Sporting Goods, Phillies fan, enjoyed gardening

Stella S. Manning, 98, of Lititz, died Sunday, June 21, 2015, at Luther Acres, Lititz, where she resided for the past 14 years.

Her husband, Nelson E. Manning, died in 2008. They had been married 72 years.

Born on May 2, 1917, in Conestoga, to the late Benjamin F. Smith and Delilah Warfel Smith, she was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters: Doris, wife of Edward Otto, of Farmington, Conn.; Dolores, wife of William Thomas, of Wausau, Wisc.; LaVon, wife of John Harnish, of Mount Joy; six granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a grandson: Mark Harnish; five sisters; and two brothers.

Stella was employed at Hamilton Watch Co. for 14 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that, she was a partner with her husband in Manning’s Sporting Goods, in Columbia, where they lived. Together, they enjoyed many good times at their cabin in Shunk. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, counted cross-stitching, baking, gardening, letter-writing, and socializing with her many friends at Luther Acres. In recent years, she became a staunch Phillies fan. She was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Lititz, and had the distinction of being the oldest member.

Funeral services were held at Trinity E.C. Church, Lititz, on June 27 at 11 a.m. Interment was in the Creswell Cemetery, Manor Township.
