Richard S. Vogel85, Manheim Auto Auction employee, WWII veteran

Richard S. Vogel, 85, of Mount Joy, passed away at Hospice of Lancaster County Mt. Joy Center Sunday, March 4, 2012.

Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Raymond Vogel and the late Harriet (Becker) Vogel. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen L. (Gochenour) Vogel.

Richard graduated from J. P. McCaskey High School in 1945 and was a member of the Lutzite Club. During high school, he was the assistant manager of the Grand Movie Theatre on North Queen Street. He served as Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific on bases in Guam and Leyte. After the war, Richard was also in the Lancaster National Guard. He was formerly employed at New Holland Machine Co. and retired from Alumax/Alcoa after working there as a credit manager for 15 years. Following retirement, he worked in the office of the Manheim Auto Auction for 14 years. Richard was a member of Lancaster Moravian Church and the American Legion Post 429 in Ephrata. He enjoyed aviation, coaching Little League baseball and was an avid Phillies and Penn State fan. Richard loved spending time with his family and granddaughters.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Marla A., wife of Thomas V. Konas, of Mount Joy; and Doug A., husband of Sally H. Vogel, of Sellersville; granddaughters: Elena Konas and Carol and Sandra Vogel; and sister: Lily Cooper, of Ephrata.

Richard was preceded in death by his siblings: Hester Goshert, Ethel Huss-Ercolino and James and Charles Vogel.

A memorial service will be held March 10 at 11 a.m. at Lancaster Moravian Church, 1460 Eden Road. Interment will be private.
