Paul Ortega Jr., 65, High Steel bridge builder, famous for his homemade salsa

Paul Ortega Jr., 65, of Orchard Road, Manheim, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at his residence.

Born in Manheim, he was the husband of Stephanie Webb Ortega, and they celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on Dec. 19. He was the son of Yvonne Thomas Ortega Frey and the late Paul Ortega Sr.

Paul graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in 1972. He worked for 42 years with High Steel as an iron worker, helping to build bridges. He loved going to the mountains in Clearfield County, gardening, long rides, keeping up with the news from his friends, and former co-workers, and was famous for his homemade salsa.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his stepfather: LeRoy K. Frey, Lancaster; two daughters: Amy Lynn Montague, Columbia; and Jeanette Lee, wife of Jonathan Good, York; two stepchildren: Nicole, wife of Gordon Allen, Marietta; and Sean Peters, Sanford, Fla.; four sisters: Donna Marie, wife of Lee Shaeffer, Felton; Diana Lee, wife of Doug Sarver, Mountville; Deborah Dee, wife of James Wilson, New Providence; Danita, wife of John Hamilton, Manheim; and two brothers: Charles, husband of Bonnie Ortega, Lititz; and John, husband of Susan Ortega, Rhodesdale, Md.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Paul’s funeral service from Groff Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 528 W. Orange St., Lancaster, on Thursday, May 9, at 5 p.m. with Keith Peters officiating. The family will receive friends at the Groff Funeral Home from 3 p.m. until time of service. The interment will be private.
