Miriam ‘Mim’ Moore, 111, active at her church, enjoyed UNO, Wilbur Buds

Miriam “Mim” Moore, 111, and one of the oldest persons in the United States, passed away on May 11, 2018 at Luther Acres in Lititz.

Miriam, a lifelong resident of Columbia, was the daughter of Mathias and Ellen Moore.

She was preceded in death by her husband: J. Edwin Moore; her sister: Ella; and three brothers: John, Frank and Raymond.

Her son: J. Edwin, lives in Gulf Shores, Ala. She has two grandchildren: Michele Thomas of York; and Paul Moore of Ephrata; five great-grandchildren; and a large supportive extended family.

Miriam was always extremely social. She especially liked playing bridge and pinochle. Miriam said her secret to a long life was eating chocolate and always being positive. Her other passion, when younger, was dancing at the Hershey Ballroom with her husband. At age 14 her parents passed and she went to live with her aunt and uncle, Joseph and Mary Denison and their three children.

Miriam worked as a weaver at the old Columbia silk mill and then later in life she worked at The Columbia Diner, Yenzers Restaurant, Buchers drug store and Artcrafters. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was a founding member of Meals on Wheels. Miriam was also a charter member of the Eastern Star, worked as a Cherry Red Lady at the former Columbia Hospital, and was a member of a knitting group that made blankets for nursing homes. She was a pollster for elections and volunteered at the Columbia Welcome Center.

Services were held May 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Columbia, with Rev. Beth Costlow officiating. Burial followed at Mount Bethel Cemetery.
