Melvin R. ‘Mel’ Erb, 92, WWII vet, owned the Lititz Furniture Co., Lititz Ambucs member

Melvin R. “Mel” Erb, 92, of Lititz, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Moravian Manor.

Born in Rothsville, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Jennie Reinhold Erb. He was the husband of the late Loretta Kulp Erb, who died in September 2013.

Mel graduated in 1941 from Rothsville High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. A World War II veteran, he was trained in business and served in supply management aboard the General A. E. Anderson troop transport ship.

Following his years in the Navy, Mel worked for Steffy Buick until he purchased the Lititz Furniture Co., which he owned and operated for 34 years.

He was a lifetime member of Salem United Methodist Church in Rothsville, where he served on numerous church committees throughout the years. For more than 60 years he was a Lititz resident and was an active member of the Lititz Ambucs and Warwick Community Ambulance Association.

A wonderful father and husband, Mel enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. He was an avid Philadelphia fan, who loved to play and watch sports.

He is survived by his daughter: Bea Erb of Upper Gwynedd; sons: Del Erb of Norristown; Kirby Erb of Lititz; and a sister: Esther Ehrhart of Lititz.

Preceding him in death is a sister: Rhoda Hoffer; and a brother: Russell Erb.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Mel’s memorial service at Salem United Methodist Church, 1744 Old Rothsville Road, Lititz, on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be held privately in Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery, Rothsville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mel may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 1744 Old Rothsville Road, Lititz, PA 17543.
