Luke M. Shuler83, Pleasant View resident, PennDOT computer analyst

Luke M. Shuler, 83, husband of the late Mary (Crouthamel) Shuler, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 at Pleasant View Retirement Community after a lengthy illness.

Born on July 8, 1928 in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Chester E. and Laura Grace (Madeira) Shuler. Mr. and Mrs. Shuler were residents of Elizabethtown for 29 years.

Mr. Shuler was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, where he and his wife at one time taught the Good Shepherd’s class. Luke was a 1945 graduate of the former John Harris High School in Harrisburg, graduating as valedictorian at age 16. He then graduated summa cum laude from Juniata College and went on to study chemistry at MIT, where he received his doctorate in physical chemistry. He was employed at PennDOT as a computer analyst for many years, working until he was 70. In his free time, Luke enjoyed reading, puzzles (especially cryptograms) and taking walks. He will be dearly missed by his family.

Mr. Shuler is survived by his sons: Benjamin R. Shuler and John, husband of Deborah Shuler, all of Elizabethtown; his daughters: Dr. Gail K. Shuler, wife of Gary Plyler, of Seabeck, Wash.; and Dell K., wife of Jack Scherneck, of Birdsboro; his sister: Sylvia, wife of Lee Byers, of East Stroudsburg; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held March 7 at the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren with Rev. Greg Davidson Laszakovits officiating.
