John P. Gilbert Jr., 82, Korea vet, retired from J.L. Clark, avid outdoorsman

John P. Gilbert Jr., 82, of Lititz, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Maple Farm

He was born in Manheim to the late John P., Sr. and Myrtle (Christ) Gilbert and was the husband of the late Elsie V. Gilbert.

John was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Rothsville. He was a life member of the Adamstown VFW Post 8795, the North American Hunting Club, the Buckmaster Hunting Club, a member of the NRA and Coopers Shooting Club and the Marietta Beneficial Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to the mountains. John worked as a tow motor operator for J.L. Clark for 33 years before he retired in 1994. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by a son: John P. Gilbert, III, husband of Carrie Gilbert of Salisbury, Md.; a step-son: Rick, husband of Cindy Ansell of Columbia; nine step grandchildren; and numerous step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a step daughter: Barbara Welsh; and a sister: Joanne Rupp.

A viewing will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. 9th St., Akron, followed by his funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in the Salem Lutheran Church of Kissel Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society-Lanc. Co. Unit, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
