Herman ‘Butch’ Smitley, 75, Vietnam vet, USAF retiree, was Father Christmas at the PA Ren Faire

Herman Leroy “Butch” Smitley, 75, passed away Jan. 17, 2019 after a chronic illness.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years: Sarah R. Smitley; and loving sons: Edward L., Robert E., and William H. Smitley. Grandchildren include: Robert Drew, Stacey, April and Raymond. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

Butch was three-tour Vietnam vet who retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service to America. He will be fondly remembered for his 27 years at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire by “Friends of the Faire” and fairegoers.

His many talents included Father Christmas, greeter, faireground maintenance and finally a volunteer security pass greeter at the gate.

Butch’s father: Herman V. Smitley, U.S. Army, World War II; mother: Jean R. Groff Smitley; and sister: Joyce; preceded him in death.

He tried to give everyone he met a smile to cheer up their day.
