Herbert Beeders, 84, Army vet, retired dentist, dental consultant, loved sports and politics

Herbert Beeders DMD, 84, of Lititz, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 surrounded by his family at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of the late Anna Gill and Jacob Beeders. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Sylvia Saks Beeders.

Herbert and Sylvia first met on a blind date while both were attending Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. After six short weeks of dating they decided to spend the rest of their lives together.

He attended and graduated from Revere High School, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., and Tufts University School of Dentistry. Dr. Beeders served as a captain in the U.S. Army stationed in San Antonio,Texas, and Chicago, Ill. He practiced family dentistry in Medford, Mass., for more 40 years. Retiring in 2003 to Lancaster from Brookline, Mass., where they raised their three children. Upon his retirement, he served as a consultant in the dental industry and served on the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission Advisory Board.

He was an avid reader, loved sports and politics. He always seemed to amaze his family with his retention of facts and history. Dr. Beeders was past president of the Medford Lions, Brotherhood of Temple Ohabei Shalom, and a member of the Tufts University Packard Society.

His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children: Kate Beeders; Joel Beeders (married to Deborah Spielman Beeders, and proud parents of Madeline, Jacob and Maya Beeders); and Jennifer Beeders Silbert (wife of Dr. David Silbert, and proud parents of Ariel and Jillian Silbert).

He was buried Tuesday, March 28, at Conestoga Memorial Park after a funeral service at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim.

The family will be sitting Shiva on Sunday, April 2, at Joel and Deborah Beeder’s home, 131 Oxbow Road, Needham, Mass., from 12 to 6 p.m.
