Harold A. Rothenberger Sr., 86, Lititz, WWII vet, long-time music teacher, Conestoga Tours driver

Harold A. Rothenberger Sr., 86, formerly of Lititz, passed away at Brethren Village Retirement Community on Feb. 23, 2015.

Born in Oley, he was the son of the late Sylvester L. and Ellen Angstadt Rothenberger. He was the husband of the late Edith Shanaman Rothenberger who passed away in 1998.

A graduate of Oley High School, Harold received his bachelor of science degree in music education from Lebanon Valley College in 1953 and a master’s degree in music education from Penn State University in 1956.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Corps and was a member of the 702nd Air Force Band and was later a member of the 553rd Air National Guard Band.

A dedicated music teacher, he taught in the Solanco and Columbia School Districts and retired in 1986 from the Manheim Township School District, where he taught for 20 years. Harold taught fourth- through 12th-grade music and served as the music department chairperson, the band director for the high school and middle school bands, high school and middle school dance bands, and high school orchestra. Following his retirement, he worked for Conestoga Tours as a charter bus driver, traveling the eastern United States and Canada.

He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Lancaster, where he served as the choir director for 24 years. He was a member of Local 294-American Federation of Musicians and was a former director of the Lititz Community Band and Jerusalem Lutheran Church Choir in Rothsville.

Through the years Harold played with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, the pit orchestra at the Fulton Theater, Bainbridge Band, Lititz Community Band, and other small groups in the Lancaster area.

A member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years, he served as a former president of the Columbia Lions Club and the Manheim Sunrise Lions Club.

Harold will be greatly missed by his son: Harold A. Rothenberger Jr, husband of Regina, Lititz; and daughters: Ruth Ellen McMinn Brown, wife of Richard Brown, Mount Joy; and Joanne, wife of Joseph McKinney, Annandale, Va. He was the proud grandfather of: Will, Frank and Katie Rothenberger; Keith and Kevin McMinn; and Ben McKinney; and great-grandfather of: Grace, Izzy, and Eli Rothenberger; Charlotte Rothenberger; and Brandon and Samantha McMinn.

Services were held Feb. 28 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Private interment took place in Machpelah Cemetery, Lititz.
