George K. Tearney Jr., 93, WWII vet, optician, manager of Bausch & Lomb Optical, nature lover

George K. Tearney Jr., 93, formerly of Lancaster, died Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Legend Senior Living, Lititz.

He was married to the late Mary “J.B.” (Bair) Tearney, who died in 2008. Born March 22, 1926, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late George K. and Catherine Irene (Hodgen) Tearney Sr.

A retired optician, George was the manager of the former Bausch & Lomb Optical, Lancaster, having over 40 years of service to Lancaster County.

He attended Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church and later St. Joseph Catholic Church, both in Lancaster. He was a proud World War II U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran. George attended St. Mary’s School and was a proud graduate of Lancaster Catholic High, Class of 1944. Mr. Tearney furthered his education at Millersville University and Franklin & Marshall College. He was an avid golfer and a nature lover.

He will be lovingly missed by his four children: Bryan E. Tearney, married to Wanda L., of Lititz; Cynthia F. Matroni; Douglas A. Tearney; and Lisa Marie Tearney, all of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Ann and. Margaret “Peggy.”

He was also preceded in death by a grandchild: Damian Asher Tearney (2008); and two siblings: Sarah Jane and John “Jake.”

A Christian prayer service was held June 18 at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, Millersville. Interment was at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, with military honors.
