Fern L. Horst, 86, IU 13 teacher, bakery owner, watercolorist, enjoyed cycling

Fern L. Horst, 86, formerly of Akron, Hershey, and Lititz, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015, at Heart of Lancaster Hospital, Lititz. She last resided at United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.

Born and raised in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mildred (Smith) Yoder. She was the wife of the late Richard James Horst for 30 years until his passing in 1978.

Fern enrolled in Millersville University at age 36 and received her degree in teaching. She taught learning disabled children for IU 13 until 1982, when she and her daughter Lisa opened the Breads and Cheese of Hershey bakery. Fern fully retired in 1992. In addition to being a loving mother, Fern enjoyed biking. She bought a Cannondale bicycle at the age of 62 and logged more than 60,000 miles of riding in her senior years. At age 64, she went on a six-week bike tour of Europe with five dear friends. At age 70, she biked across the United States from California to Florida. She biked through Europe 15 times and all over the United States. Her last bicycle trip was a 700-mile two week ride in Europe with her oldest daughter Lynn. She was an avid cyclist until the age of 84. Fern was also an accomplished watercolor artist. She took lessons from Andy Smith in Lititz and painted scenes from her biking trips all over the world and was a skilled artist until the time of her passing. Fern often said “I have lived a full life doing everything I wanted to do and so much more.”

Fern was a tax collector in Akron in the 1960s, was the first woman Akron Borough Council member, and was active in the Lutheran churches in Akron and Brickerville all of her life.

Surviving are her five children: Lynn (Lee) Firestone of Reamstown; Lisa (Lee) Hocker of Newmanstown; Drew (Joyce) Horst of Lampe, Miss.; Dale (Deborah) Horst of Lititz; and Daniel (Kris) Horst of Lynn Haven, Fla.; seven grandchildren: Kristin Slovik, Amy Nedimyer, Molly Boody, Megan Foster, Richard, Garret, and Becky Horst; eight great-grandchildren: Matthew, Jarred, Chandler, Katelynn, Rylee, Sam, Emily, and Noah; a sister: Bertha (Chet) Hoover of Ephrata; and a brother: Galen (Irene) Yoder of Arizona.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a grandson: Jason Miller; a brother: Frank Yoder; and a sister Nancy Rohrbach.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, July 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Brickerville United Lutheran Church, 340 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday, July 23, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the church, followed by her funeral service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Scott K. Davis officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
