Esther Charles, 91, Rohrerstown Mennonite member, pianist, enjoyed canning

Esther Charles, 91, formerly of Manor Township, and a resident of Landis Homes for the past 14 years, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at her residence.

She was the wife of the late Nelson M. Charles who passed away on July 15, 2000. She was born in Brownstown, daughter of the late Harry Martin Landis and Emma Myer Landis.

She was a member of Rohrerstown Mennonite Church. She enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, singing, gardening, canning, and her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Larry (Shirley) Charles, George (Mary) Miller, Jerry Miller, and Lois (Barry) Witmer; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister: Ada Landis.

She was preceded in death by her brothers: Ivan, John, Paul, and Luke Landis; and sisters: Mary, Ruth, Lena, Martha, Anna, Norma, and Grace.

The family would like to thank the staff at Landis Homes for the support and care shown for their mother.

Services were held Jan. 3 in the Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes, Lititz, with Chaplain Jim Leaman and Pastor Dennis W. Ernest officiating. Interment followed in Habecker Mennonite Cemetery.
