Emery Webster McClure, 93, Lititz, WWII vet, worked at Coatesville VA Hospital, avid gardener

Emery Webster McClure, lived 93 years before answering God’s call. Fondly known as “Webbie” to many friends, he passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, after a long illness.

Born June 18, 1921 to Emory F. and Lydia Redman McClure. Formerly of Parkesburg, he had lived the last four years with his daughter and son-in-law in Lititz. Web Married Dorothy Sweazy in December of 1944, she passed away on March 11, 1978. Web married Mary Trego Souders, she passed away on January 25, 2001.

As a young man, Webster held many jobs including mowing grass in Christiana, working at the American Grocery Store in Gap and working in his Uncle’s greenhouse. He was a member of Christiana United Methodist Church. Enlisting in the Army on Jan. 23, 1941 Web went overseas to England, July 1942. He sustained burns in 1944 and on Sept. 7 1945 was honorably discharged at the Valley Forge Hospital.

He was a founding member of the Chester County Hunting Club, New Albany. He was a Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #384 PA, member of the American Legion Post #42, Towanda, and a member of the Monroeton Rod & Gun Club, Monroeton. Gardening was a pastime that he embraced as long as the weather held. Apples, sugar peas, sweet corn, asparagus, tomatoes and black raspberries were among the items harvested and shared with friends and family. He enjoyed hunting deer, rabbit, turkey, grouse and squirrel, it gave him many enjoyable times with his buddies at the hunting cabin.

He worked at the Coatesville VA Hospital in several departments starting out shoveling coal into the furnace, then working as a pipe fitter and finally general mechanic until his retirement. He was always ready to lend a helping hand no matter what needed to be repaired or built, even helping his neighbors on their farms.

He is survived by his daughter: Barbara S., wife of Roman “Russ” Rusynko of Lititz; step son: Peter “Mac” husband of Roberta Belshaw Souder of Parkesburg; and their two children: Samantha and Zac.

The family would like to thank Hospice and Community Care during Webster’s home care and the Hospice Inpatient Center in Mt Joy. We greatly appreciate all the doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains who supported Webster and his family.

Funeral service will take place at the Shivery Funeral Home, 111 Elizabeth St., Christiana, on Oct. 9 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Elaine Miller Bortman officiating. Interment will be in the Sadsbury Friends Burial Grounds of Gap. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Bob Fryer and Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, PA 17552.
