Earle M. Schmuckle, 69, of Lancaster, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Landis Homes, Lititz.

He was born in Lancaster, the son of the late Earle W. and the late Betty Jane Schmuckle.

Except for a few years living in Lititz and Willow Street as a child, Earle lived his entire life in Lancaster City, which he loved. He resided for 56 years at his last address. Earle graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School and Elizabethtown College. He started his career at Dodge Cork Co. as an accountant. He rose to become assistant treasurer of the company, and later decided to pursue a career in public service. Earle was elected as a Republican to one four-year term as city treasurer. This was followed by two four-year terms as city controller. While at Lancaster City Hall, Earle purchased the Wabank Variety Store located in his neighborhood, which he operated with his family.

In 1985, Earle was asked to pursue further public service. He attended certification classes to become eligible to be elected a district justice. He was subsequently elected to serve as a district justice in the city’s Fourth and Eighth wards from 1986 to 1998. After leaving office, Earle worked part-time at the Overlook Golf Course on the driving-range and as a starter/ranger. Starting the summer of 2005, Earle enjoyed ushering at the Lancaster Barnstormer baseball games, in Section 20, which he did through the 2008 season. As a teen, he had worked at Stumpf Field selling concessions in the stands. He liked to say that he may be the only one to have worked at both ballparks. Earle was born into the Lancaster Moravian Church, and was a life-long member.

Surviving is a sister: Cynthia J., wife of Joseph K. Martin of Orlando, Fla.; and a brother: Douglas L., husband of Carla W. Schmuckle, Lititz; and two nieces: Jessica E. and Christine D. Martin of Orlando, Fla.
