Dr. William Ridgway, M.D.94, medical officer, family doctor

Dr. William G. Ridgway, M.D., 94, formerly of Akron, entered into rest at Moravian Manor, Lititz, Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011.

He was born in 1917 in Bridgeton, N.J., the son of the late Hartley W. and Margaret C. (Corliss) Ridgway. He was the husband of the late Emily K. (Kagey) Ridgway.

Dr. Ridgway was a graduate of Ursinus College, class of 1938, and Jefferson School of Medicine, class of 1942. He served his internship at Cooper Hospital, Camden, N.J., and served as a medical officer aboard the USS Murphy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was in family practice in Akron from 1946 through 1989 and was on the active staffs of the Ephrata and Lancaster General hospitals. He was a clinical instructor of family medicine at the Milton Hershey School of Medicine and Hahnamann School of Allied Sciences. He served as a Lancaster County deputy coroner. He was past president and member of Ephrata Area School District Board of Directors, Ephrata Kiwanis Club, Lancaster Academy of Family Practice and Lancaster City and County Medical Society.

He was a past delegate from Lancaster City and County Medical Society to the Pennsylvania Medical Society Council on Medical Service; a representative of the Governor’s Advisory Committee to the Department of Public Welfare; a charter member of the Pennsylvania Medical Care Foundation; chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Pennsylvania Medical Society to the Auxiliary; member of Lancaster Academy of Family Physicians, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians; past chairman of Committee on Medical Economics of Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians; editor of Keystone Physician; and a certified parliamentarian and past parliamentarian, district censor and chairman of Bylaws Committee of Lancaster City and County Medical Society.

Dr. Ridgway was an accomplished sailor, having spent many years sailing on the Chesapeake Bay on the family sailboat.

He is survived by a son: Donald C., husband of Diane Ridgway, of Denver, Colo.; daughter: Nancy R., wife of Andrew H. Vogel III, of Lancaster; six grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. brothers: Paul G. Ridgway, of Enterprise, Ala.; Wade H. Ridgway, of Mantua, N.J.; and half brothers: Rushton Ridgway, of Vineland, N.J.; and Josef Ridgway, of Norristown.

In addition to his wife and parents, Dr. Ridgway was preceded in death by a brother: Hartley W. Ridgway.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
