Deaths of Local Interest – Reported July 2, 2015

Mary Katherine “Kathy” Broome entered into eternal rest June 27 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She worked for Kratos Defense and Security Solutions (Formerly Herley Industries) for 20 years as the administrative assistant for the vice president of Operations. Mary Katherine enjoyed her church by singing in the Choir, and participating in a Bible study. She also sang for a number of weddings. Her sister, Sally Ringer, lives in Lititz.

Robert E. Fasnacht, 84, of Lancaster, passed away June 23 at Calvary Fellowship Homes. He was employed by Lancaster Newspapers for nearly 47 years as a compositor. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His proudest accomplishment was his successful climb up Pikes Peak in Colorado during his Army training. His brother, Harold, husband of Marilyn, resides in Manheim.

Glenn B. Gockley, 78, of Mohnton, died June 25, at his home after a battle with Parkinson’s. Born in Ephrata, Glenn was a dairy farmer and a member of Gehman Mennonite Church and Gideons International. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His sister, Jean Frysinger, lives in Lititz.

Fred Eshelman Haldeman, 79, of Englishtown, N.J., passed away peacefully June 24 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick, N.J. Fred proudly served in the United States Army. He enjoyed staying active lumberjacking and cycling. He was a history buff and an avid reader. Most importantly, Fred was a loving father, grandfather, and brother. His brother, John Haldeman, lives in Manheim.

Robert H. Kreider, 79, of Lancaster, passed away June 25. Robert was a dairy farmer. He was actively involved at his church, Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. He was a member of Barber Shop Harmony Society. His daughter, Jodi Kreider Wetherhold (Mike), lives in Lititz.

Harry J. McLaughlin, 94, of Landisville, passed away peacefully June 24 at Oak Leaf Manor North. Harry served in the US Army during World War II. Harry later joined Armstrong World Industries and worked in the Tile Division for nearly 32 years until his retirement. His daughter, Frances Beaner, lives in Manheim.

Donald L. Nicklaus, 67, of Lancaster, passed away June 21. In 1977, he joined Woodstream Corp. in Lititz, as the director of purchasing for 12 years. His mother, Dorothy (Richwine) Nicklaus; and his brother, Paul Jr., married to Elaine Nicklaus; all reaide in Manheim.

Thelma Jean Shaub, 78, of Holtwood, entered into rest June 24. Jean retired after 27 years as a bus driver for Eschbach Bus Service. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing all types of crafts. Her daughter, Rita (Himelwright), wife of Bob Troop, resides in Manheim.

Dorothy M. (Horton) Smith, 93, of Lancaster, died June 25 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Dorothy was employed as a sales clerk for Hickory Farms for 10 years until her retirement. She was a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Church, Manheim. Dorothy is survived by her brother, Murray Horton, and his wife Mary, of Lititz.
