Deaths of Local Interest – March 21, 2019

Clayton S. Bowman, 97, of Ephrata, died March 11 at Fairmount Homes. Clayton retired from Sensenig’s Feed Mill in New Holland, formerly Earl Sauder’s Feed Mill where he had worked for 33 years. He was a member of Mellinger Mennonite Church. He enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. A son, Robert C., married to Sandra (Pickel) Bowman, lives in Lititz.

J. Robert Peifer, 84, of Akron passed away March 13 after a courageous battle with cancer. At one time, Bob worked as president of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Lititz. Most recently Bob and his son Joe were founders and partners, for nearly 30 years, of Cloister Tax Services of Akron. Bob volunteered on the boards of Re-Uzit Stores, Friendship Community and Akron Mennonite Church, often as treasurer. His hobbies included traveling, golfing, genealogy, entertaining guests, birdwatching and refinishing furniture.

Andrew L. Shimko Jr., 70, of Ephrata, passed away March 11 at his home. He served in the Marine Corps. He was employed by U.S. Steel in Homestead and was a volunteer at the Uniontown Fire Company for 16 years. After the steel mill closed he moved to Ephrata and was employed by GSM Industrial until he retired in 2014. Andy loved sports, dancing and socializing with family and friends. A son, Andrew, husband of Alicia, resides in Lititz.

Donna Jean Von Nieda, 65, of Ephrata, passed away March 5 at home. Donna was a real estate agent for Caldwell Banker. She enjoyed going to the beach, visiting the cabin in the mountains and spending time with her grandchildren. Her sister, Dianne, wife of Dennis Leeking, lives in Lititz.Clayton S.
