Deaths of Local Interest – July 30, 2016

Ivan Carl Callihan, 93, passed away July 26 at Brethren Village. He served on the Ephrata Borough Council, and was an Ephrata Borough Tax Collector. He retired as CFO from W.W. Moyer Co./Gerber Children’s Wear. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Bethel Township, Berks County. His sister, Alice Adams, lives in Lititz. A brother, Robert L. Callihan, lives in Manheim.

David H. Fox, 98, of Ephrata, passed away July 24, at his residence. A farmer, David was a member of New Holland Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference. He had 277 great-grandchildren. His sister, Edith Bailey, lives in Lititz.

Bernadette Hilbert Glatfelter, 83, of Columbia, passed July 25 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. She operated a clothing bank for her brother, Fr. Joseph Hilbert, who was the pastor of the migrant workers in Bendersville. She was a genealogist, horticulturist, enjoyed teaching candy making, needlework, and sewing. Her daughter, Elaine Carrigan, lives in Lititz.

Walter Robert Kempf, 90, of Lancaster, died July 22 at Brethren Village. A World War II vet, Walter worked for 37 years as an engineer and in management for Hamilton Watch Co. and successor companies, retiring in 1988. During his career, he was awarded five U.S. patents for parts for the Hamilton Electric Watch. His hobbies included a lifelong interest in model airplanes and beagle field trials. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion (Hartman) Kempf.

Robert W. Mengle, 95, of Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, passed away July 25. He was employed as an industrial arts teacher at Blue Mountain School District and retired in 1979. Robert is survived by a daughter, Carol L., wife of Robert Fesko, of Manheim. A granddaughter, Heidi, wife of Kurt Gardner, resides in Lititz.

Russel E. Swarr, 83, of Mount Joy, passed away July 23 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Rapho Township, Russel was the husband of Gladys (Ranck) Swarr with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this Oct. 22. Russel was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church, and enjoyed playing chess and hunting.
