Deaths of Local Interest – Aug. 2, 2018

Malcolm Foy Marrs entered into peace on July 24 at Brethren Village Retirement Community in Lititz. Mac proved his dedication to his country by earning his place in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later joining the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. He had a successful career with ALCOA. Always an engineer at heart, he enjoyed electronics, auto repair, trains, woodworking and brain teaser puzzles.

William E. Smedley, of Homestead Village, Lancaster, age 93, peacefully passed away on July 17 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had a long career in education in the Central Dauphin School District, first as a teacher of general science at Lower Paxton Junior High School, and subsequently as the principal of Swatara Junior High School. Bill was known for his fierce loyalty to the teachers, students and families of Swatara, and the efficiency and discipline of his school. His daughter, Patrice, lives in Lititz.
