Deaths of Local Interest – Dec. 21, 2017

Judith A. (Witmer) Dietrich, 78, formerly of Narvon, passed away at Landis Homes on Dec. 16. She worked as a mail clerk for GAI-Tronics, Mohnton, for 34 years, retiring in 2008. She was involved in the dog show world for over 50 years, and owned Dutch Wood Dog Kennels of Reading. Her brother, Dale, married to Judy (Long) Witmer, lives in Manheim.

Amos N. Hostetter, 90, of Mohnton, died of natural causes on Dec. 11 at his home. Amos was a dairy farmer most of his life and he also owned and operated Goods Lawn and Garden at Goods Store in East Earl for a time. He also was a member and served as a minister at Honey Brook Mennonite Church. A daughter, Lois E., married to Lamar H. Nolt, lives in Lititz.

Harold Elias Reed, 83, died Dec. 13 at Landis Homes, Lititz. A seminary graduate, he was a pastor in Chester, then in Somalia for 14 years with Eastern Mennonite Missions. As human resources director and Africa administrator for EMM, he traveled annually to Europe, Eastern and Southern Africa, offering missionary support and fostering relationships with local churches. Until illness curtailed formal ministry, Harold also served as chaplain at Garden Spot Village, New Holland. Adept at administration and a good listener, he blessed family and those he worked with, and had skill in vehicle maintenance.

Paul N. Rutt, 97, of Ephrata, passed away Dec. 14 at Lincoln Christian Home. A farmer, he was a member of Springville Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference. A daughter, Mabel, wife of Raymond Martin, lives in Lititz.

Edna L. Sheaffer, 89, formerly of Lancaster, died Dec.15 at Moravian Manor. Her wish was to go home for Christmas and be with her beloved late husband of 71 years, Amos L. Sheaffer Jr. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family. Edna was a member of Community United Methodist Church for many years.

William A. Sloat Sr., 92, of Lancaster, formerly of Elizabethtown, died peacefully Dec. 13, at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Alaska. William had worked at the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot as a supervisory equipment specialist for many years before retiring. He was a member and former trustee at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown. William and his wife enjoyed traveling. A son, Roger B., husband of Elaine M. Sloat, resides in Manheim.

Gloria C. Spitler, 85, formerly of Ephrata, died Dec. 16 at Lancashire Hall, Neffsville. Gloria was the owner and operator of Ruth’s Luncheonette at Green Dragon. She cherished her family, especially her grand and great-grandchildren; enjoyed walking, jigsaw puzzles and playing cards. Surviving are her daughter, Juanita G. (Dean A.) Kissinger; and granddaughter, Amy (Eric) Weaver, all of Lititz.

Eileen D. Tierney, 93, of Landisville, passed away Dec. 15 at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy. Over the years, Eileen worked as a paraprofessional and librarian in the Neptune School system in Neptune, N.J. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her daughter, Cathy E. Maddox, wife of Kevin; and her son,Robert J. Tierney; as well as grandchildren: Samantha, Robert, Nicolas and Rebecca Maddox, all reside in Manheim.
