Dean Lowry, 87, WWII vet, taught math and science at Hempfield H.S., Lutheran

Dean Lowry, 87, of Lititz, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, at Temple Hospital, Philadelphia.

He was previously married to Joanna Bigler Lowry, who passed in 1991, as well as Betty Jane Weaver in 1997.

Born in Columbia on July 22, 1926, he was a son of the late Harry and Edna (McClair) Lowry.

Mr. Lowry was a veteran of WWII. His last tour of duty was a 1st Sgt. with the American Graves Registration Command in Austria.

He graduated from Stevens Trade School in 1944, Millersville University in 1951 with a B.S. and an M.S. He taught mathematics and science at Hempfield High School until his retirement in 1984. Following retirement, he was a realtor with Colonial Realty for 8 years.

Dean served as chairman of the East Hempfield Twp. Parks and Recreation Commission. He was an Assistant Scoutmaster and a Merit Badge Counselor of Boy Scout Troop #41 in Landisville. He was a 60-year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Landisville, where he served on the church council and taught Sunday School classes.

Dean is survived by his sons: Thomas Dean Lowry of Lancaster, and John Patrick Lowry of Denver; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will be held Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m. at the Luther Acres Community Room, 300 E. Main St., Lititz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susquehanna Association for the Blind, 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603.
