Charles R. Schatzmann81, restaurant owner, county purchasing director

Charles R. Schatzmann, age 81, of Paradise, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 surrounded by his family at the Essa Flory Hospice Center following a short illness.

Bob was the son of the late Charles & Olga Burkley Schatzmann, both from Switzerland. Bob was married to Bernadine Latinette Schatzmann with whom he celebrated their 56 years of marriage in May of 2011.

Bob was born July 9, 1930 in Atlantic City, N.J. He attended Atlantic City High School before moving to Lititz and graduated from Lititz High School, class of 1948. Bob attended Lancaster Business College. Along with his parents, he owned and operated the former Dutch Town & Country Inn Restaurant. Upon his restaurant retirement, Bob was purchasing director of Lancaster County for 17 years, organizer of Lancaster County Purchasing­Co-op and president of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Purchasing Co-op. Bob served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1955 as a staff sergeant in radar. He was a member of the Christiana Masonic Lodge #417 F&AM, Lancaster, and Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple and the West Chester Elks. He was a past member of the Lititz and Paradise Lions clubs, past president of the State of Pennsylvania Restaurant Association from 1970 to 1972 and past president of the Lancaster County Restaurant Association. Formerly, he was a Republican Committeeman and auditor for Paradise Township and he served on the Pequea Valley School Board. Bob was a kind and gentle man providing very well for his family and lived every day to the fullest. He always enjoyed a fine dinner and a good Manhattan. He enjoyed his yearly trips to Aruba and going to the casinos and playing bingo. He was an avid Philly Sports Fan and was a former season ticket holder to the Philadelphia 76ers. Bob’s greatest joy was following his grandsons through their junior high, high school and college basketball years. Sarge was always there.

Surviving besides his wife are three children: Charles R. Schatzmann Jr., of Paradise; Sandra C. Schatzmann, of Lititz; Michael A., husband of Gloria Diller Schatzmann, of Paradise; and two grandsons: Michael Schatzmann Jr. and Matthew Schatzmann, both of Paradise.

His funeral service took place at the Shivery Funeral Home, Paradise, March 1 with Pastor Gary Meier officiating and Walter "Butch" Harry sharing a final farewell. Interment was private March 2 in the Moravian Cemetery, Lititz.
