Betty Muench, 86, IU13 teacher, Contact Helpline volunteer, enjoyed Rummikub

By on June 3, 2015

Betty Muench, daughter of the late Warren Hensel and Marion Hess Foley, died peacefully in her sleep May 27, 2015 at Pleasant View Retirement Home, Manheim. She was 86.

She was predeceased by her husband: Charles; and sisters: Virginia and Colleen.

She is survived by three children: Nancy, wife of Jere Brendle, of Washington Boro; Eric, husband of Martha Corrigan, of Manheim; and Laurie, wife of Steve Wanner, of Landisville. Also surviving is her brother: Warren “Pete” Foley of Mount Joy; grandchildren: Sarah, Zachary, Charles, Patrick; and stepgrandson: Chad Vinelli (Erin Armstrong Vinelli); as well as stepgreat-grandchildren: Brooke and Mitchell Vinelli.

Betty grew up in Hershey and was a graduate of the Class of 1946 from Hershey High School and of Hershey Junior College. She played the string bass in high school, though it was rumored that she did so only to be closer to the tuba section where Chas hung out. Fortunately, that relationship bloomed so that the rest of this story could be told. Her day of death coincides with what would have been her and Chas’ 65th wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary, Ma and Pa. Together again at last!

She began her working career in the personnel department of Hershey Chocolate, then followed Chas to Tokyo during the Korean Conflict and worked for the Department of the Navy. Her career was interrupted by her three kids, but began again as a teacher’s assistant for IU13 for 17 years and later as a substitute teacher.

Betty volunteered for Contact Helpline for many, many hours and, anonymously, helped callers deal with life’s crises. Her experience raising her three children was all the training she needed!

In retirement, Betty loved to travel, spend summers at Long Beach Island, playing cards and board games (Rummikub!) and honing her skills as an active listener. She loved and is loved by many and will be missed.
