Alice Mailander, 88, certified Braillist, member of Salem Lutheran Church

Alice Frances Birs Mailander, 88, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 9, 2014 at her home in Lititz.

She was the wife of Albert, who predeceased her in 2007. She was born on Feb. 11, 1926 in New York City, but spent most of her life in New Milford, N.J., where she lived with her husband until they retired to Lititz in 2002. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia Gaynor Birs. Her brother Richard Birs died in November 2013.

She is survived by a daughter: Carol Mailander of Wrightwood, Calif.; and three sons: Thomas Paul (Dorothea) Mailander of North Easton, Mass.; Robert David Mailander of Medical Lake, Wash.; and Steven Mark (Heather) Mailander of Hillsdale, N.J.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister: Eleanor Hall of Leesville, La.

Alice was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lititz, and a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Milford, N.J. and was a certified Braillist for Lutheran Braille Workers and a member of Literacy Volunteers of America.

A memorial service was held Oct. 11 at Luther Acres, Chapel of The Good Samaritan, Lititz, on Oct. 11. Interment followed at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery of Kissel Hill, Lititz. Memorial contributions can be made to Evangelical Theological Seminary, 121 S. College St., Myerstown, PA 17067.
