While police have not identified the two men involved in Wednesday’s road rage shooting, the Record Express has learned through reliable sources that the gun was fired by Jim Mellinger, a 74-year-old Lititz area resident.

Darrel Smith, the man who was shot in the jaw, is a 2002 graduate of Warwick High School. Smith’s children were reportedly present when the shooting occurred, and Smith is currently recovering from emergency surgery at Lancaster General Hospital. He has not been able to give investigators his side of the story.

“We’re not releasing names at this point,” said Regional Police Chief David Steffen, “but what you’ve been told sounds like accurate information.”

No charges have been filed at this point, and thus Mellinger’s concealed weapon carry permit has not been revoked. He was cooperative with police following the incident and was released after questioning.

“This is going to come down to statements, forensic evidence, and interpretation of law,” Steffen said. “That’s what it always comes down to, and this is no different.”

Mellinger did not immediately return calls to the Lititz Record Express Friday afternoon.

He said police are well aware of rumors that have been circulating the community since Wednesday morning.

“We have to go with facts. Whispers and rumors do not constitute a crime,” he said. “We’re cognizant of constitutional rights.

“But if someone knows something that we should know, we strongly urge them to come forward.”!!!AAA Shooting 4 shot
