Thanksgiving has come and gone, the downtown is all decked out, and the Eagles are in first. It’s time to tackle the Christmas gift checklist.

But before you rush out to buy an unbelievably overpriced Lego set, take a moment to plan for summer!

That’s right, July 4 is a mere eight months away, and the presiders over the park’s big event have allowed the community to pick the next theme.

Will 2015’s Fourth be dubbed:

  • July Fore’th (in support of the Ladies U.S. Open)
  • America Lives Here!
  • Happy Birthday USA!
  • Lighting Up the Fourth!
  • Freedom’s Eternal Flame
  • Red, White and Cool!

Voting ends Monday, and you can submit your pick online at

I was hoping that the Fourth Committee might consider Kiss Meets the Phantom of Lititz Springs Park, a nod to Gene Simmons and company’s made for TV movie from 1978. I didn’t get much support on that one; maybe I didn’t rake enough leaves during park clean-up day in the spring.

Anyway, as you know, July 4 is the biggest event of the year for this town, and even thought Christmas is on our minds, the planning starts now. Vote early and often, but do it by Monday!

Back to Christmas…

A big, heart-felt thank you goes out to Kathy Blankenbiller, who has given her soul to the Merry Lititz Christmas event. This is a true community woman who loves Lititz, and loves Christmas. As she steps down from running Have Yourself a Merry Lititz Christmas after this year, it will be a tough loss for Lititz. But thankfully the event will continue, and Kathy has assured us that she will still be involved (in a smaller capacity). The key to this event’s success is support from the community, through donations and financial backing. Imagine Lititz without a Santa-themed Christmas event?

Kathy’s focus is always on the kids, because that’s what Christmas is all about. Saturday will feature a scavenger hunt through 27 shops in downtown Lititz, starting at the Welcome Center. There will be a live nativity in the park, a gingerbread house contest featuring the work of 14 WHS students, and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at Lititz El from 10:30 to 3, greeting every child who has a wish list.

It’s important to keep in mind that this Saturday will be Santa’s only visit to downtown Lititz in an official capacity. He will not be stationed at the caboose in the park, his headquarters for the past several years.

So, the focus this year is this weekend, starting with Christmas in the Park Friday night, and a full day of fun on Saturday.

And don’t forget to send your best photos from the weekend. The best shot gets on our front page next week and wins 50 Lititz Shopping Dollars! Send ‘em to me at

If you’re not feeling the Christmas spirit after this weekend in Lititz, you’re a Scrooge McDuck!
