A 33-year-old mother of two children died in an early morning blaze Sunday that destroyed a Penn Township home and killed her two dogs.
Christina Joy Shanholtz, turned 33 just two months before the fatal fire which broke out in the kitchen of the home at 1127 Newport Road, which is just around the corner from Penryn Fire Company.
Fire Chief Shannon Martin said emergency workers received several 911 calls beginning at 12:40 a.m. reporting the fire in which more than 100 firefighters battled.
“The fire started in the kitchen, but they’re still not exactly sure what the cause was,” Martin said Monday. “By the time we arrived the house was fully engulfed. (Christina) didn’t make it.”
Two Penryn firefighters assisted the Lancaster County Coroner in removing Shanholtz’s body from the home, Martin said. Deputy Coroner Robert Granzow pronounced her dead at the scene.
Shanholtz, a Hempfield High School graduate was found in the living area and succumbed to smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni reported after an autopsy on Monday.
Fighterfighters were scheduled to go through critical stress debriefing on Wednesday evening.
At the scene, firefighters met Shanholtz’ companion, Patrick Hoffert and another man, whom lived in a trailer behind the home. The couple’s two children were not home that evening, Martin said.
