‘Sister Act’ opens at Dutch Apple Sept. 20

“Sister Act,” a feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film, is filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story. Sister Act begins Sept. 20 and runs through Nov. 10 at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster.

When disco diva Deloris witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with the uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but blows her cover. Soon, the gang is after her, but find themselves up against her new found sisterhood.

Kimberly Oliver makes her Dutch Apple debut as Deloris, a role she was waited to play for what seems like forever. Oliver is from South Florida, but currently resides in Dallas, Texas, with her teenage son. She is a singer, actress, producer and lover of all things artistic and can’t wait to take on this production.

Taking on the role of the humorously dry Mother Superior is Jama Bowen. Bowen is reprising this role after playing it at the Dutch Apple’s sister theatre Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Fort Myers, Florida. She was previously seen at Dutch Apple as Angela in “Honky Tonk Angels.” Bowen has had Top 40 radio hits, sung for President Bill Clinton, and performed with Sheryl Crow, Reba McEntire and George Jones. She was a long-time soloist on “The Waking Crew” live on WSM Radio, home of the Grand Ole Opry.

The meek Sister Mary Robert will be played by Allison Fund. A Lititz native, Fund is delighted to be back at the Dutch Apple after being in the most recent production of “Swing!” Her favorite regional credits include Hope Harcourt in “Anything Goes,” Eileen in “I Love a Piano,” Wendy in “Peter Pan,” and Joyce in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” She has also been seen in the national tours of “Million Dollar Quartet” (Dyanne understudy) and “Fiddler on the Roof “(Chava).

Tickets prices vary; they can be purchased at dutchapple.com or by calling 717-898-1900.
