Laurel Avenue Lights opens for season Nov. 30
Rich and Wendy Motz, who live at 659 Laurel Ave., Lititz, have been hard at work planning for their 2019 holiday light display.
“I have been so busy this year building all the new props and making everything work better than ever,” said Rich Motz.
It’s not enough for Motz just to put up lights; he’s got to have something new and different each year to entertain his loyal fans.
“The biggest project by far is real model trains, including Polar Express, that are enclosed in a protected outdoor display with interactive buttons to make them run,” said Motz. “I have been working on the project full time since July.”
Laurel Avenue Lights are synchronized with music. Motz has created two unique shows for this year.
“The two major shows that alternate each night are ‘Frozen’ and ‘Polar Express,’’ he said. “Also, this year we have the theme of Christmas in Lititz,” said Motz, “so I made a shadow sign that sits high on the house.”
Spectators are encouraged to tune car radios to 88.3 FM and watch the display parked safely with vehicle lights turned off as a courtesy to neighbors and other viewers.
As always, the Motzes will be collecting donations at the display to benefit a local organization. This year, proceeds will benefit Lititz Fire Company No. 1.

With the help of friends from Lititz Sign Company, Rich Motz was able to put his new “Christmas in Lititz” shadow sign on his roof.
Opening night
Laurel Avenue Lights kicks off its 19th season on Nov. 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The street in front of the house will be closed for a watch party featuring music and free cookies and cocoa.
“Bring lawn chairs and enjoy the only night that both shows will be shown back to back,” encouraged Motz.
After opening night, the display will be running daily from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on weeknights, and 5:30 to 11 p.m. on weekends, all of December.
“We enjoy having people park and enjoy standing on the sidewalk, letting the children push the many interactive buttons,” said Motz. “That is so wonderful to watch.”
