Lititz Area Mennonite School is pleased to present “CRASH!,” a staged adaptation of the novel by Jerry Spinelli, to be performed May 4 at 12:30 p.m.; and and May 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. The school is located at 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz.

The story follows two boys, Penn Webb (Quaker, vegetarian, nerd) and John “Crash” Coogan (self-centered seventh grade football phenom) as the power of ongoing patience and compassion transforms a bully into a friend.

The production, which features more than 30 student actors, stage techs, sound and lighting crew, is a student-requested reprise of an earlier production.

“Five years ago, we were looking for a script that would feel relatable for our middle school actors, and I had the idea of adapting this novel,” says director and LAMS staff member, Kristen LeFever.

Through friend-of-a-friend contacts, LeFever obtained Spinelli’s permission to proceed with the project.

“I was so excited when I got the email; he’s one of my favorite children’s authors, and it meant a lot that he would allow us to use his work like this!”

The original staging of LeFever’s adaptation took place in May of 2011. This year’s recently updated production features an entirely new cast and crew, many of whom were first or second graders when the original was staged.

“It’s fun to see what this new group of kids brings to the story-how they understand and interpret the characters,” says LeFever.

There is no admission fee for this event; however, a free-will offering to support the LAMS performing arts program will be raised during intermission.
