Celtic Martins to perform during Jigger Day

By on May 29, 2019

With Irish and other Celtic music, and Irish step-dancing, the Celtic Martins will provide the entertainment at the Eicher Arts Center’s annual Jigger Day event June 9. The band will perform starting at 5 p.m. at the historic Eicher House, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park.

From 3 to about 5 p.m. that day, the Eicher will offer to the public ice cream sundaes and liquid refreshments such as lemonade and iced tea. There is no admission charge for the 5 p.m. entertainment, or charge for the sundaes and drinks, but donations to the non-profit Eicher Arts Center will be accepted.

The Eicher group got started in the 1980s to help save and find new use for two structures that dated back to the first half of the 18th century on what was then the Eicher family farm, and is now part of the borough park. The group began sponsoring an annual series of cultural and entertainment events at the Eicher House, and named a June event each year after the jigger-style sundaes that were popular in the mid-20th century at a pharmacy soda fountain on Main Street in Ephrata.

Weather permitting, the Celtic Martins will perform on the deck of the Eicher House near Cocalico Creek, and the audience will be outdoors. Audience members are urged to bring folding chairs or blankets.

The Celtic Martins wowed the audience as the featured act at the Eicher’s 2017 Jigger Day. Nelson and Elaine Martin had included music in the home-school curriculum for their six children growing up in Lebanon County, and as the Martin Family Band the family began performing in public about 15 years ago. They have entertained at such festivals as Bethlehem Musikfest and Kutztown Folk Festival.

The six Martin siblings– Emily, Melissa, Brian, Christy, Zach and Alex — and their parents, will play a variety of Celtic tunes at the June 9 show. Their shows feature many energetic renditions of traditional Irish tunes with some original songs.

Individual members of the group display award-winning fiddle-playing and step-dancing talents during the Celtic Martins shows. In one tune, “Catharsis,” at the June 9 show, the three Martin sisters will fiddle and step-dance at the same time.
