Former Penn Manor assistant Neal Vital was named as Warwick’s new bowling coach at the July school board meeting.

Over the years, Neal Vital has compiled quite the bowling resume.

Twenty-five perfect games.

Back-to-back 300 games en route to an impressive personal-high series of 837.

Assistant coach for the PA State champion Penn Manor bowlers last March.

So Warwick fans should be excited to know that Vital is bringing his talents to Lititz.

At a school board meeting on Tuesday, July 19, the 60-year-old Vital was approved as the Warriors’ new head coach, replacing Bill Bernstein, who stepped down following the 2015-16 season.

“I’m very excited,” said Vital, who assisted his brother, Chris, for the past seven seasons with the Comets. “Mixed emotions at the same time, having helped with the State championship at Penn Manor. It was tough to leave them.”

Bernstein’s seven-year run at the helm was highlighted by Warwick’s first-ever Eastern PA Regional crown on March 6. But he also had them in serious contention with Penn Manor for the Section One and Lancaster-Lebanon League titles.

The Warriors graduated senior Austin Barilar from last winter’s squad, but the cupboard is stocked. And Vital acknowledged that as a key factor that he was interested in the position.

“That was the biggest reason that I decided to do this was the potential they have,” said Vital, who has been bowling for more than 50 years. “Knowing the teams across the state and knowing the talent level that’s coming back here, I expect big things.”

Of course, it didn’t hurt that the Warriors and Comets already have an established rivalry in place.

“(Penn Manor)’s won the last three L-L championships and Section One championships, but Warwick’s been right there giving us a battle and helping push us,” Vital said. “When I did make a move, I wanted to go to a team that was established and would be a strong rival to Penn Manor … it will be interesting.”
