Herr named First-Team All-State

The lineup of pitchers that Warwick’s softball team faced in L-L play this spring was a scary one.

Twice, Warwick faced Penn Manor’s Brittany Hook and Hempfield’s Kara Cook in Section One.

In crossovers, the Lady Warriors squared off against Solanco’s Hanna Phillips.

Yet, despite facing those aces, Amanda Herr still put up staggering numbers in her junior season for Warwick, batting .589 with 26 RBI and 29 runs. Of her 33 hits, she had 21 extra-base knocks &tstr; six homers, eight triples and seven doubles.

Perhaps most remarkably, Herr struck out just three times in 68 plate appearances.

“Pretty impressive,” Warwick coach Mark Hough said.

Her accomplishments didn’t go unnoticed by voters on the Pennsylvania High School State Softball Coaches Association, who named her a First-Team selection at first base on the 2017 All-State 6A Team.

“You’re always excited for the kids to be recognized in the State,” Hough said, “and with her statistics within Section One, and especially the pitchers that we faced, to carry that kind of average was outstanding.”

Hook and Cook also earned 6A First-Team accolades at pitcher and DH/DP, respectively, while Phillips took home 5A First-Team honors at pitcher.

Asked if Herr, a St. Joseph’s University recruit, took her game to another level this past spring, Hough said, “That’s without a doubt, and I can tell you she’s going to take it to another level next year.”

During a season in which the Lady Warriors lost several key players due to injury, Herr was a driving force in helping the team win six straight, while scoring 58 runs in that stretch, and nine of 10 to finish the regular season. In the end, they went 12-4 in Section One and 13-7 overall after qualifying for the District Three playoffs.

Herr and Adelphi University-recruit Nicole Mengel combined for 12 of Warwick’s 20 home runs in the middle of the lineup.

“That speaks a lot for the power in that middle of the lineup,” Hough remarked.

Oh yeah, in addition to her exploits at the plate, Herr made 10 appearances on the pitcher’s mound, going 5-3, 3.99 ERA with 48 K’s and just nine walks in 52 2/3 innings.

It was a well-rounded 2017 season for Herr.

“That’s exactly right,” Hough said. “A lot of the heavy stuff was lifted by Nicole (7-4, 2.04 ERA, 73 K’s in 67 2/3 innings) this year, but I think we’re going to rely on Amanda to be that leader in the circle next year.”

Warwick graduated Mengel, Abby Erickson, Jolyssa High, Megan McNair, Mackenzie Russell, and Nicole Shirk, but they will bring back Herr, senior-to-be Kate Seibert from injury, and a cast of solid returnees, so the hopes will be high.

“We’re going to be pretty darn strong,” Hough said. “I think Amanda is the kind of kid that’s going to be ready for that challenge (to take her game to another level).”

A text message from Herr convinced Hough of it. When Warwick’s skipper communicated with his All-State player, telling her that she was going to be leaned on during the year ahead, Herr replied with, “I’m ready, coach. I won’t let you down. I’m really excited for the season this year.”

L-L pitchers, beware.
