Barons, Warriors start slow

The Manheim Central golfers recorded a second straight 1-5 finish in a Section Two match at Tanglewood Golf Course in Quarryville.

The Barons (2-10), however, were just four strokes away from a .500 finish with their team score of 346. That was just one behind fifth-place Ephrata (345) and three in back of Lampeter-Strasburg (343).

The host Golden Mules, while posting three of the top five scores, took top honors with 320, followed by Garden Spot (333) and Cocalico (334).

The Barons were led by Eli Perron’s 83, who finished tied for eighth overall while lowering his score by nine strokes from the team’s opening match. Alastair also showed improvement while firing an 85, then Ben Hollinger was next with an 88, and Haley Goodling’s 90 completed the top four.

Garden Spot’s Aaron Fricke led all golfers by posting a 74.

In other action, Drew Baker carded a team-best 79 and the Warwick golfers started the season with a 2-4 finish in a Section One match at Crossgates last Thursday morning.

With their team score of 350, the Warriors placed three strokes ahead of Penn Manor (353) for fifth place. Elizabethtown took seventh place with a round of 386.

Completing the Warwick golfers’ top four were Stephen Frey (90), L. Hart (90) and Walt Pelensky (91).

Manheim Township, paced by Chris Hornberger’s 71, rolled to the perfect finish with a strong team score of 287, nearly 30 strokes ahead of runner-up Conestoga Valley (314). Hempfield (318) and Cedar Crest (325) rounded out the top four.

Elsewhere, the Manheim Central golfers got a tough start out of the gate last Thursday, notching only one win with a score of 342 in a Section Two match at Foxchase Golf Course.

Ben Hollinger’s 75 led the Barons (1-5) and freshman Haley Goodling chipped in with an 81 in her first varsity match. Eli Perron and Alsastair Proud completed Manheim Central’s top four with 92 and 94, respectively.

Host Cocalico captured top honors with a round of 308, four strokes better than Garden Spot (312), who was led by Aaron Fricke’s match-best 73.

Solanco (327) was third, followed by Lampeter-Strasburg (331), Ephrata (341), Manheim Central, and Lebanon (498).
