Shirley A. Merkey, 85, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at her residence in Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

She was the wife of the late Samuel B. Merkey, who died in 2007. Born in Rapho Township, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Verna W. Kline Shonk.

Shirley was employed at Skyline Distributors, a division of Acme Markets for 26 years before retiring in 1998. Prior to this she worked for Manheim Central School District in food service. Shirley was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Manheim. Her hobbies included quilting, and reading, and she enjoyed volunteering at Pleasant View Retirement Community.

Surviving are two daughters: Karen L., wife of Frank J. Darin, Elverson; Kay M. Hershey, Manheim; three granddaughters: Gina, Marie, and Molly; a great-grandson: Blake; a brother: Robert G., husband of Nancy Shonk, Mount Joy; and two sisters: Lorraine, wife of Luke Nolt, Manheim; and Gladys Shenk, Lancaster.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to her memorial service at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Hoffer Auditorium, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, on Friday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
