Lloyd Rohrer Swarr, 93, WWII vet, vo-tech instructor, MC school board member, Barons fan

Lloyd Rohrer Swarr, 93, Mount Joy, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Juniper Village Mount Joy.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1923, and grew up on a farm in the Mount Joy area. He was the husband of the late Estie Musser Swarr, who passed away in 1993; and later married Betty Jane Good Swarr, who passed in 2016.

Lloyd was a 1941 graduate of the former Mount Joy High School, and later enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He proudly served from 1942 to 1946, achieving the rank of Quartermaster 1st Class. During his service, he was stationed on the USS Levy and earned the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and seven Bronze Stars. He also was awarded the Philippines Liberation Bar and Victory Medal.

After the war, Lloyd worked as a machinist for AMP Inc., Mount Joy, and also was employed as a part-time mail carrier in Mount Joy. During the 1970s, Lloyd changed his career path and taught at McCaskey High School as well as the former Mount Joy Vo-Tech School. Then after receiving his degree from Temple University, he went on to retire as the assistant principal of the former Willow Street Vo-Tech in 1985. Lloyd was a member of The Mount Joy American Legion and the Mount Joy VFW, where he served as post commander.

A lifelong resident of Rapho Township, Lloyd served on the Manheim Central School Board and was an avid fan of Manheim Central and Donegal athletics. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in school activities. His favorite pastimes included taking motorcycle rides, meeting friends at the local diner and spending time at the vacation home in Lewes, Del.

Lloyd had a full and happy life, always greeting everyone with a smile. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, who was loved and will be deeply missed by his family.

He is survived by his children: Patricia (Bruce) Schweigert of Elizabethtown; John (Deborah) Swarr; Robert (Tina) Swarr; Thomas (Judy) Swarr, all of Mount Joy; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother: Ralph (Jane) Swarr of Illinois.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Kathy Borelli, wife of Joe, of Mount Joy; and brothers: Howard, Earl, Irving, and Russel Swarr. Lloyd was the son of the late John Lehman and Edna Rohrer Swarr.

Services were held April 3 at West Green Tree Church of the Brethren, Elizabethtown. Interment was in Cross Roads Cemetery, Mount Joy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 740 W. Greentree Road, Elizabethtown, PA 17022; or to Masonic Village Hospice, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
