Florence Helena Van Gelder, 104, voracious reader, talented swimmer and cook, accomplished pianist

Florence Helena Van Gelder, 104, formally of Midland Park, N.J., passed away quietly Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at Moravian Manor in Lititz.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to James and Elizabeth Neuman MacDonald on Washington’s birthday, Feb. 22, 1911.

She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur Van Gelder Sr.; devoted mother of Arthur Jr., deceased; and James of Merchantville, N.J.; adoring grandmother of Laurie, Linda and Julianna; and loving great-grandmother of Seafina and Leonora.

“Flo” was a voracious reader, having read well over 8,000 books in her lifetime. Her cooking skills were the joy of her family. She was a talented swimmer and a very accomplished pianist, having, at the age of 16, performed on a local radio station.

Flo’s request was a private cremation.
