Bernadette L. Barnes, 81, long-time educator, MCSD substitute teacher, enjoyed traveling, knitting

Bernadette L. Barnes, 81, of Manheim, formerly of York, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at Pleasant View Retirement Community.

Born in York, she was the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Beatrice Mortorff Larkin. She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Barnes Jr., who died in 2010.

Bernadette was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church in Manheim, where she taught CCD classes. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from West Chester University and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was an educator for many years teaching in Elkhart, Ind.; Sturgis, Mich.; Mother Seton Catholic School in Emmitsburg, Md.; York city schools, and Lancaster Country Day School.

After moving to Manheim, she was employed as a substitute teacher by Manheim Central School District. She was a member of the Sturgis, York, and Michigan Teachers’ Associations. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. In addition to reading and knitting, she enjoyed traveling and attending the theater and symphony.

She is survived by a daughter: Dr. Maribea W. Barnes-Marsano, wife of Dominic M. Marsano, of Marion, Ohio; four siblings: Regina C., wife of Edwyn Bennett, of Dover; John A. Larkin of York; a twin brother: Michael E., husband of Joann Larkin, of York; and Peggy M., wife of Leo Keller, of New Freedom; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass was held Aug. 11 in the Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, with the Rev. Stephen Weitzel as celebrant. Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
