By on September 11, 2019

Celebrate our veterans at Lititz VFW Post 1463’s Family Freedom Festival, Thursday, Sept. 12, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lititz Farmers Market in the Lititz Springs Park.

Children’s activities include creating Christmas cards for those serving overseas or living in veterans homes, and a coloring contest, for 5 to 10 year olds, for a chance to win a prize from Leisure Bowling & Golfing Center. Learn about the Pledge of Allegiance, the American flag and upcoming VFW scholarship opportunities.

The VFW will host a therapy dog and therapy duck from K-PETS Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services and a flag folding ceremony will be presented at 6:30 p.m.

Also on hand will be the Liberty War Bird Association, a Lancaster Airport-based veterans group, who restored a Huey Vietnam War-era helicopter, providing Vietnam veterans with a link to their past by offering an opportunity to experience flying in the iconic helicopter. Their mission also includes educating veterans, pilots, and the general public about the unique and historic role played by the Huey helicopter during the Vietnam conflict. The organization strives to ensure that the legacy of service by both the veterans and the aircraft that flew them is not forgotten.

Representatives of the Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County will provide information on the purchase of brick pavers for the new memorial plaza, which sets on a plot of land adjacent to the Lititz Public Library.

This free community event runs in conjunction with the Lititz Farmers Market, which features locally grown and produced products &tstr; heirloom vegetables, fresh-from-the orchard apples, baked goods, hummus, guacamole salsa, meats, fresh seafood, flowers and more. The park picnic tables offer a perfect spot to enjoy market dining options, such as Thai food from Lemongrass, artisan street food from the Gourmand food truck, warm soft pretzels from Dutch Country Concessions and rich scoops of ice cream from Lititz-based Jersey Cow Creamery.
